Fiddle, Guitar, Pipes, Tin Whistle

Declan and I moved to Melbourne to live in September/October, 1967 and stayed until late 1969. During that time Declan was a regular performer at Traynors. He'd also performed there on our many trips to Melbourne before we moved there to live.

Declan sang a variety of songs, mainly Irish, but his material also included Australian and other folksongs. He accompanied himself on the guitar, and also played fiddle and tin whistle.

Declan was also well known for playing the pipes - arguably the first most of us saw playing them, at least in Victoria and at Traynors. Declan was revered as one of the giants (excuse the applicable inference) of folk performers in Australia and also notable as exponent of Australian culture, particularly via performing the original lyrics of John Dengate (John usually used tunes formerly used by older songs - in line with preceding tradition of Australian folk song creation at the time, where broadsheets would often display the words 'sung to the tune of [such and such]'). Declan, a resident of Sydney, was well known to folk music enthusiasts in Melbourne and along with other exponents of traditional song such as Spooner, McIntyre, O'Rourke and Parkhill, easily drew a sizable attentive crowd to Traynors.
